Earlier today, January 20, 2025, the PNU community gathered to kickstart the activities in celebration of the institution’s 33rd Universityhood Anniversary. This year’s installment of the annual commemoration banners the theme “Producing Future-Ready Educators: Sustaining Excellence, Transforming the Future of Education.” The opening program, which coincided with the first day of classes for Term 1 of Academic Year 2024–2025, featured various activities participated in by students, faculty members, and administrative employees of the university.

A parade around the campus, joined by students from various institutes and year levels, as well as faculty members and administrative employees in their respective team-building groups, initiated the festivities. It was followed by the weekly flag ceremony hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration. In his reflection, VPFA Dr. Lordinio A. Vergara elaborated on the value of integrity, which he underscored as a conscious choice to remain pure and clean amidst filth and corruption. He then encouraged the PNU community to always live and work with integrity intact.

A special message for the occasion was delivered by none other than the University President, Dr. Bert J. Tuga. Dr. Tuga first welcomed back PNUans for the second term of the current academic year. He shared that the celebration is anchored on achieving excellence, resilience, and innovation toward shaping the future of education. He affirmed the university’s commitment to continue equipping educators with the necessary tools and skills to face the challenges of the ever-evolving landscape of education. Dr. Tuga then enjoined everyone to contribute to the efforts to sustain standards and forge new paths toward reforming education. He concluded his remarks by declaring the official opening of the 33rd Universityhood Anniversary Celebration, emphasizing camaraderie and cooperation in achieving a shared vision.

Dr. Jennifer Taylan-De Jesus, Director of the Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Leisure Studies (ISPELS) at Central Luzon State University and a certified Zumba instructor, led the dance exercise. Shortly after, the candidates for Ginoo at Binibining Pamantasan were formally introduced and donned their official pageant sashes.

A special highlight of the opening ceremony was the Sportsfest. Four teams composed of faculty and administrative employees competed in a series of competitive team-building activities. The White Team, headed by the Vice President for Academics, Dr. Marilyn U. Balagatas, emerged victorious after garnering the highest number of points.

The Universityhood Celebration commemorates PNU’s elevation from a college to a full-fledged university. On January 12, 1992, Republic Act 7168, signed into law by then-President Corazon C. Aquino, took effect, solidifying the institution’s role as the premier center for teacher education and training.
