With banners raised and spirits high, the Philippine Normal University (PNU) community formally kicks off the festivities commemorating its 34th year as a university on January 19, 2026. Anchored on the theme “From Excellence to Impact: 34 Years of Transforming Teacher Education,” the opening ceremony was held at the PNU grounds and featured a series of activities that brought together university officials, faculty members, students, and administrative personnel.

The program commenced with the weekly flag ceremony hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Student Success and Stakeholders Services (OVPSSSS). In her message, newly designated Vice President Dr. Leah Amor S. Cortez emphasized integrity as a guiding principle in PNU’s continuing journey. She reminded the community that genuine progress must be anchored on character, expressing her hope that integrity remains at the heart of the University’s pursuit of impact. As she noted, “As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that our legacy is not measured solely by achievement or recognition, but by the values we live by.”

University President Dr. Bert J. Tuga formally declared the opening of the series of activities for the 34th Universityhood Anniversary. In his message, he reflected on PNU’s transformation from its humble beginnings to the institution it is today, highlighting the University’s steadfast commitment to developing future-ready teachers and leaders. He underscored that while excellence is essential, it finds its true purpose only when it creates meaningful impact. He shared, “May this celebration inspire us to reflect on our shared history, take pride in our collective achievements, and move forward with renewed purpose and responsibility.”

Adding color and energy to the celebration was a dance exercise session led by Dr. Jennifer Taylan-De Jesus, signaling a lively transition to the day’s succeeding activities. The program also featured the introduction of the candidates vying for Binibini at Ginoong Pamantasan 2026, further heightening the festive atmosphere.

The celebration then took on an athletic tone as faculty and staff gathered for a sports festival at the University grounds. Facilitated by Prof. Erwin M. Blancaflor, with the assistance of selected Bachelor of Physical Education students, the activity fostered camaraderie and teamwork through a series of engaging team-building games. The Green Team, led by Vice President for Finance and Administration Dr. Lordinio A. Vergara and College of Alternative and Lifelong Learning Dean Dr. Celia M. Ilanan, emerged as the overall champion.

Later in the day, academic reorientation activities were conducted across the campus. Batch Dagyaw attended a reorientation session at the AV Theater, while homeroom meetings for second- to fourth-year students were held in their respective classrooms. These sessions addressed class organization, the identification of class officers, academic requirements, the completion of insufficient or incomplete grades, and the clarification of capstone expectations. Clear agreements on deadlines and proper coordination through class secretaries were likewise established to ensure a smooth start to the semester.

As the 34th Universityhood Celebration continues, the PNU community eagerly looks forward to the activities lined up in the days ahead—each designed to strengthen unity, celebrate shared achievements, and reaffirm the University’s enduring commitment to excellence that creates impact.
