The Philippine Normal University held the Research Forum and Gawad Sulo for Outstanding Research and Extension 2022 on May 31, 2023 via Zoom. These programs are managed by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Planning, and Quality Assurance (OVPRPQA) through the Educational Policy Research and Development Center (EPRDC) and the Community Partnership and Extension Office (CPEO), in coordination with the University Events Management and Public Relations Office (UEMPRO). In attendance were faculty members and administrative staff from across the PNU System. The event was headed by Dr. Adonis P. David, Vice President for Research, Planning, and Quality Assurance (VPRPQA), and Dr. Jennie Jocson, Vice President for Academics (VPA). Hosting this year was Dr. Mary Grace Pamela G. Faylona.

The first part of the program is the Research Forum, which featured three (3) faculty researchers who discussed their respective project interests. Dr. Marie Paz E. Morales, University Professor and Director of the Publication Office, discussed Science Capital in Focus. She discussed Educating Science Teachers for All (ESTA), a project funded by the European Union Erasmus Plus (+) Programme, which she headed. This project promoted inclusive education in the context of science, which benefited many teachers in both basic and tertiary levels in the Philippines.

Dr. Merimee T. Siena and Prof. Ma. Laarni D. Buenventura, who are faculty members and counselors from the Office of Student Affairs and Student Services (OSASS), presented the results of their work under their respective Project-Based Research Grants (PBRG) Batch 11. Dr. Siena talked about the findings of their mixed-methods research on the role of work-related factors on teachers’ experience of flourishing and psychological richness in life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prof Buenaventura shared the results of their quantitative research that aimed to test a model for teachers’ gender-sensitive characteristics in blended teaching.

The second part of the program is the Gawad Sulo for Outstanding Research and Extension 2022. A total of 26 faculty members and administrative staff across the PNU System received recognition and incentives for their publication in reputable scientific journals. In addition, special recognition for research publication and production were also awarded to academic units and faculty members for their exemplary research outputs and publication in 2022.

The top five (5) units given the Outstanding Research Publications are: (1) College of Graduate Studies and Teacher Education Research (CGSTER); (2) Institute of Teaching and Learning (ITL); (3) Philippine Normal University – North Luzon (PNUNL); (4) Faculty of Arts and Languages (FAL); and (5) Philippine Normal University – South Luzon (PNUSL).

The top five (5) units that received the Outstanding Research Production are: (1) Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences (FBeSS); (2) CGSTER; (3) Philippine Normal University – Visayas (PNUV); (4) Office of Student Affairs and Student Services (OSASS); and (5) PNUNL.

Two (2) faculty members tied for Outstanding Research Publication: Dr. Darryl Roy T. Montebon of ITL and Dr. Levi E. Elipane of CGSTER. Outstanding Research Production was awarded to Dr. Felicia I. Yeban of FBeSS.

The COMPASS Extension Award (Community Partnership toward Academic Sharing and Service), an initiative of CPEO, recognized the top three (3) units based on their remarkable and impactful extension services to their respective communities: (1) FBeSS; (2) FAL and OSASS; and (3) Faculty of Educational Sciences (FES) and Philippine Normal University – Mindanao (PNUM). Three (3) faculty extensionists were also awarded for their commendable volunteerism in community extension activities, namely: (1); Ms. Analyn C. Bituin (2); Prof. Carl O. Dellomos; and (3) Ms. Charmane T. Espejo.

The PNU Research Forum and Gawad Sulo for Research and Extension are annual University events that aim to motivate faculty members and administrative staff to inculcate a culture of research and service by providing institutional recognitions, awards, and incentives for accomplishments by unit/s and individuals in research production and publication as well as community extension.
