The Student Personnel Program at the Philippine Normal University is administered and supervised by the Dean of Student Affairs and Student Services (OSASS), his/her faculty and staff, in coordination with other units of the University.


OBJECTIVES

The OSASS coordinates and monitors the University Student Services Program.

Specifically, it seeks to:

  • promote the welfare of PNU students by providing relevant and adequate services that respond to their varied needs;
  • enhance the intellectual, cultural and social environment of the campus for the total development of students at the University; and
  • assist students in decision-making processes and the development and refinement of their intrapersonal, interpersonal and social relations.

FUNCTIONS

The OSASS takes charge of the following functions:

  • Guidance and Counseling;
  • Discipline;
  • Co-Curricular Programs;
  • Training; and
  • other related activities.

  • Euthenics/Personality Education Classes

    Personality Education 1 – Teacherhood Education Classes

    This course introduces freshman students to the nature, realities and challenges of teaching as a profession. Through varied experiential activities, they are given opportunity to reflect on teaching to reflect on teaching as their career choice. Appropriate and interesting activities are likewise provided to help the students develop the right attitude towards their course and eventually their commitment to teaching. To facilitate their adjustment in this University, this course includes a discussion on the mission, goals, philosophy as well as the rules and regulations of the school.

    The course likewise orients freshman students on the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers in order for them to be familiar with the society’s expectations on how they should behave.

    Personality Education 2 - The Teacher’s Personality A

    This course is designed to help the prospective teachers develop a pleasing personality with emphasis on personal hygiene, good grooming, poise and posture, proper choice of clothes for different occasions, appropriate use of accessories and different ways of enhancing one’s personal attributes. In this course, the students are guided to discover techniques in personality improvement and develop self-confidence as they learn to appreciate their own self-worth as unique individuals.

    Personality Education 3 - The Teacher’s Personality Education B

    This course focuses on the self-attributes of a teacher as a role model; the self-esteem, lifestyle, high level of professionalism, concomitants of other personality, applied manners and etiquette, and the ways of enhancing one’s personality to meet the expectations of others.

    Personality Education 4 - Enhancement of Problem Solving and Coping Skills

    One of the most important attributes of an actualizing person is the ability to define and solve problems effectively. The course discusses strategies that allow students to develop the ability to analyze and spot problems correctly. It gives students the opportunity to select from the vast arrays of problem solving approaches the best method to use to solve his personal and academic problem. Using the experiential approaches, the students will be motivated to participate actively in the discussion and lecture. Topics range from conflicts to dealing with problems to individual coping mechanism.

    Personality Education 5 - Leadership and Group Process

    This course guides the students in assuming their leadership role as future teachers. It provides both theoretical and practical application of enhancing leadership skills by discovering and developing leadership potentials. It stresses on developing personality traits by clarifying goals, vision, functions and responsibilities of a teacher, which are the foundation for building positive relationships with others. It also includes hands-on experiences in facilitating different types of group activities.

    Personality Education 6 - Career Planning and Employment

    This course prepares the prospective teachers to handle the challenging and complex professional world of teaching. It provides the student with a theoretical framework, and opportunity for career planning by exploring career goals, interests, skills, values and achievements. Experiential activities will be provided to assess students’ level of readiness in the world of teaching profession.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING OFFICE

The Guidance and Counseling Office is located at the ground floor of the Maceda Hall. It is open from 7:00A.M. to 7:00P.M. and from 8:00-5:00 P.M. on Saturdays. It offers guidance services to all students of the University and provides counseling to students who need help in academic, personal, and social problems.

University Guidance Counselors conduct intake interviews and conferences with students and parents; handle counseling cases; and facilitate growth groups for students’ development like live-in seminars and the like.
