UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS
- Bachelor of Secondary Education
Majorships:
- Biology
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Education (DepED), Teacher Training Institutions (TEI’s), that includes Philippine Normal University (PNU), and various professional associations are rediscovering the need for curricular reforms to improve the existing science curricula to upgrade knowledge in different science areas. Furthermore, the way science is taught in the elementary and secondary schools have evolved through times to achieve the goals and standards in science education. Information explosion and globalization have also demanded more from teacher training institutions, thus, science educators are compelled to respond to the call of producing teachers who can cope with these scientific advances. The exponential growth of knowledge, both the foundational and disciplinal, as well as the change in application of such knowledge in life have correspondingly altered the views of teaching and learning more particularly in life sciences.
The program aims to place biological knowledge in the fullest modern perspective molding teachers of the new Biology armed with the intellectual and aesthetic appreciation of the complexities of living things and their interrelationships in nature. Moreover, it allows the acquisition of skills to discover ways to gain new knowledge, verify data or information, eliminate old errors and make their experiences a meaningful education.
Cognizant of these issues, the revision of the existing BSE Biology Program is called for. The revision is conceptualized to produce competent, humane, and well-rounded science teachers.
- Chemistry
The curriculum program is content-based geared towards developing students to become exemplary teachers in Chemistry and at the same time can work in industries as chemists, laboratory supervisors and researchers.
Specifically, the program aims to;- Train students to become scientists in their chosen profession.
- Develop students to do scientific researches.
- Develop national consciousness through values and right attitudes in teaching whenever possible.
- Prepare students to develop a variety of learning materials or instructional materials using computer technology.
- Prepare students to work as analysts and researchers in industries and companies.
- General Science
Provides students with adequate knowledge and skills to teach fundamental concepts, principles, theories and laws of Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental Science competently in the secondary level. It further develops students’ competence in cognitive and technological know-how, research, problem-solving skills especially in relation to environmental concerns, issues and problems.
- Home Economics (new)
The new Home Economics program as envisioned shall develop an encompassing and integrative skills and competencies for survival in the competitive world. This proposed revised curriculum for Bachelor in Secondary Education, Major in Home Economics shall provide greater opportunities and experiences in the discipline. This would allow the students to acquire and apply the needed knowledge and skills in the different areas of Home Economics.
- Home Economics (BSE-HE old)
The old Home Economics program prepares the students to teach Technology Education and Home Economics (THE) in high school. It is a Service program for the College of Education. It includes the four components of THE namely Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Agriculture Arts and Entrepreneurship.
- Physics
Aims to produce teachers who are equipped with adequate knowledge, skills and methodology to teach physics competently in the secondary level.
- Physics and Technology
This course is part of the Technology-Based Teacher Education Curriculum of the Department of Science and Technology that PNU is piloting. The curriculum has both science and technology components. The science component provides for specialization courses in Physics while the technology component provides for application skills. The curriculum equally focuses on the enhancement of science and technology concepts and principles and their application to specific skills.The BSE PT curriculum is envisioned to produce a new breed of teachers who will be technologically literate and trainable for specific industries.
Specifically, the course aims to:- offer an alternative BSE program with units in Physics and Technology
- produce teachers who are competent and effective I teaching Physics and Technology
- produce teachers with strong theoretical and skills application backgrounds on Physics and Technology
- Bachelor of Science
Majorships:
- Biology for Teachers
The program offers an adequate spectrum of instructions and intensive training to prepare the students for graduate studies and research in the life sciences. It seeks to impart to the students the role of the life sciences in coping with the demands of the modern technological world of life.
Graduates of this course can go into university teaching or even high school teaching by taking 18 units of education subjects; pursue a medical course, or engage in non-teaching science related position.
The interfacing of biology and chemistry in research and in classroom teaching is just one of the challenges in science education in the new millennium (Dervan, 1998). This is also true in Physics. Thus, fields like Biochemistry and Biophysics surfaced.
In the past, discoveries in chemistry and physics have led to significant discoveries in Biology. In the next years, the situation will be reversed. Chemistry focused on the teaching of atoms and structure of matter. Physics tackled mechanics and thermodynamic processes. Biology centered on the physiological and biological functions of matter. Today, chemistry concepts are based on the structure of the molecules. Physics talks about the structures and functions of molecules in relation to heat and energy. Biology centers on the function of molecules as related to life processes.
The challenge now facing science educators is to prepare competent teachers and educators to meet these demands. Because of this new direction, teachers who are not major in biology but who are assigned to teach students who are not biology majors but may want to teach biology in the future should enrich their knowledge (content) to cope up with the current change in biology education.
- Chemistry for Teachers
The program develops graduates who can work in industries as chemists, laboratory supervisors and researchers. It equips students with the necessary competencies to teach Chemistry in both the secondary and tertiary levels as well.
- Home Economics and Technology Education
The Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Technology Education prepares and equips the students to teach Technology Education and Home Economics (THE) in high school. It involves the inclusion of varied technology application in areas of Home Economics, Industrial Arts, and Fishery Arts, and Entrepreneurship.
- Information Technology Education
The program focuses on the application of information and communication technologies in the development, implementation and evaluation of ICT enabled learning environments and teaching strategies. The program aims to produce competent graduates who possess the necessary knowledge; skills and values demanded of the IT profession and committed graduates who will serve the community. We envision that graduates of this program will become part of the manpower pool of the country’s basic and tertiary education as IT teachers and or trainers on educational courseware development website development, etc. Graduates of this program shall take the lead role in technology integration in the classrooms across disciplines and across levels.
- Mathematics for Teachers
Prepares students for research and teaching Mathematics courses for the secondary and tertiary levels. It aims to develop Mathematicians for the academe, government service, as well as for the industry.
- Nutrition and Dietetics for Teachers
The bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics degree program has been designed to equip the students with knowledge, attitudes and skills in dietary prescriptions and administration of clinical and therapeutic diets, supervision and management of meals in various feeding institutions. It also seeks to help the graduates plan, manage and execute community nutrition programs to alleviate and/or eradicate malnutrition problems in he country.
- Physics for Teachers
The BSPT course is a DOST funded undergraduate scholarship program, the main purpose of which is to produce component physics teachers that will answer the need in the secondary schools. This pioneering program in science education has, among others, the following objectives:
-To produce highly-qualified physics teachers who are well-prepared with the concepts and at the same time competent with the methodologies;
-To contribute to the development of a scientific culture in the regions.
The curricular program is characterized by:
- concentration in the major courses as much as those offered in the BS degree programs;
- completing education and professional courses;
- consortium with DLSU for certain major subjects that require highly- technical laboratory work;
- intensive summer seminar-workshop at UP-NISMED for teaching instrumentations.
Students of the program are nationally selected by DOST and PNU from among the best high school graduates each school year.
Undergraduate Specialization:
- Home Economics and Livelihood Education
This is a program designed specifically for those who will teach Home Economics and Livelihood Education in the elementary levels, Grade IV, V and Vi.; It focuses on the components like Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Agricultural Arts, and Entrepreneurship.
