The program aims to equip English majors with knowledge and skills in meeting the challenges of present-day English language teaching thereby producing quality English language teachers, practitioners, and researchers who passes a deep sense of commitment, professionalism, integrity and nationalism.
Specific Objectives:
- To demonstrate competence and expertise in English language teaching through knowledge and skills gained in the various specialization courses;
- To use different strategies in the teaching of the four macro skills, namely, listening, speaking, reading, writing, inculding grammar and literature;
- To exhibit proficiency in the use of English in day to day classroom discussions, tasks, and activities;
- To effectively use educational tools and appropriate technology in enhancing and facilitating the teaching and learning of English in and outside of the classroom;

Undergraduate Specialization in Filipino

The AB/BSE in Literature is a double program with two streams – English and Filipino. The program helps create a well-rounded, knowledgeable, creative teacher, and compleat professional steeped in liberal education. When viewed both as ecriture (written text) and oral performance/tradition, if not as cultural artifact – literature evokes as well as captures the socio-political, psychological, spiritual dilemma of our times – then and now. The program equally responds to the peculiar needs/demands of literature teachers in teaching their discipline. Moreover, the course addresses the issue of providing mastery of content and growing professionally in the nuances of methods and assessment.
Finally, the AB/BSE program in literature makes the academic offering come in full circle in that the graduate diploma, master’s, and doctorate in literature have been set up much earlier; hence, the undergraduate programs fulfills the promise of full verticalization.
Objectives:
The program seeks to produce literature teachers with :
- Updated content knowledge to enhance their skills as well as boost their morale in teaching literature
- Sufficient repertoire of methodologies and techniques in teaching the major genres

The Library and Information Science program intends to strengthen competencies of prospective information specialists / librarians for speedy and efficient services which library clients need. It shall also emphasize the development which could be used in the practice of the profession.

Objectives:
- Update theoretical knowledge and practical skills in information access and handling.
- Make the Library as an information center of knowledge
- Provide a deeper knowledge and understanding of what librarianship is as a profession and what it can offer to society of complex information needs
- Provide enriched learning experiences on how to deliver functional services in school libraries in general and how to apply information technology skills in various types of libraries.

The Undergraduate Certificate with specialization in English program aims to equip the individual who is interested in becoming an English teacher with the theories of teaching, teaching skills, communication skills, subject matter knowledge, pedagogical reasoning and decision-making, and contextual knowledge to become an effective teacher.
Campus Writing & Advising
The program provides training for future journalism teachers and school paper advisers in either English or Filipino or in both languages in all grade levels – elementary, secondary and tertiary.
Filipino
The program addresses the need for more specialists in Filipino. It trains the prospective teacher to teach Filipino.
Reading
This is offered to undergraduate students over and above their regular curricula. A total number of 24 units in Reading is required to obtain the certificate in the specialization

The English Language Arts specialization equips teachers, graduate students, researchers and curriculum specialists with the theories and practices of linguistics and language testing.

Pagtuturo ng Filipino
Ang programa ay naglalayong maipagpatuloy ang aktibo at mahalagang pakikilahok at pagbibigay serbisyo ng PNU sa mga programang pangwika ng DepEd, CHED, at ng iba’t ibang institusyong pang-akademiko sa buong bansa. Tungkulin din nito na manguna sa pagbibigay ng mga napapanahong kaalaman, kasanayan na bunga ng mga pananaliksik hinggil sa mga teorya sa pagtuturo at pagkatuto ng wika tungo sa pagtatamo ng kahusayang akademiko at kahusayan sa pananaliksik ng mga mag-aaral kaugnay ng misyon, bisyon, at layunin ng Pamantasan at Kagawaran.

Objectives:
The proposed program aims to:
- Provide the professional training for potential teachers of linguistics, Language researchers, translators, and lexicographers in the Philippines and in other Asian countries;
- Equip its graduates with the funfamental knowledge and insights into the nature and structure of languages which will enable them to do postgraduate work in applied and theoretical linguistics, language education, and literature successfully;
- Meet the need for more language experts whose function requires the development of practical orthography, literacy work, and literature production ni the cultural communities; and

Objectives:
- Provide the students with the basic knowledge of the theoretical foundations of bilingual education which will help them manage and carry out instruction in bilingual education/bicultural settings;

- Assist students to conduct research on specific problems related to bilingual education - learning/teaching the language(s), preparation and evaluation;

Primarily this specialization seeks to:

- help provide consultation service on such areas as curriculum design in literature, literary criticism, preparation and evaluation of teaching materials; and upgrade teacher's competencies in teaching literature in all levels particularly those in the tertiary level, let alone assist in teaching-training programs.

Ang programang ito ay nagbibigay nang higit na malalim na kaalaman at pang-unawa sa mga isyung kaugnay ng disiplinang ito tungo sa pagbuo ng malikhaing solusyon sa anumang suliraning pangwika. Malaking katulungan ito hindi lamang sa mga mananaliksik at mga pinunong kaugnay sa pagbuo at pagpapatupad ng mga patakaran at programa tungkol sa wika.

Objectives:
- to offer avenues through which to learn linguistic and literary concepts and theories;
- to apply linguistic and literary theories in Languages/Literature Teaching,
- Bilingual Education and Literature and the multidiscipline of Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics;
- to provide opportunities for the application of linguistic and literary theories in said fields and multidiscipline.
- Literature (English & Filipino Stream)
The Program:
The distinct place of literature in the academe can neither be overly stretched. to illustrate, it is viewed as an instrument to liberate, empower, and humanize the students as they build up their personal, creative, spiritual, and interpersonal constructs. For instance, the DECS sees the wisdom of offering literature from first to fourth year High school. Equally, CHED requires tertiary students, regardless of discipline, to take a minimum of 6 literature units to round off their general education.
Objectives:
Specifically the program seeks to:
- Steep scholars, literature teachers and educators with an in-depth study of the philosophical underpinnings as much as the literary theories given in their discipline.
- Contribute one's share to the growing field of literary investigations, research studies and translations of regional national and world literature.
- Enhance competencies of teachers and educators in the teaching, planning, preparation, and evaluation of literature programs.
- Lead in the movement for curricular reform as well as in the preservation of the nation's literary treasures.
- Reading Education (English/ Filipino)
The Reading graduate programs primarily aim to support the educational system's program of improved quality of reading instruction. They shall forward high-grade instruction in the knowledge and skills incumbent in the area and disseminate its outcome and advance leadership in the realization of these goals.
Objectives:
- Prepare reading professionals with a solid foundation in learning theory, language development, comprehension, diagnosis and remediation of reading peformances, theoretical models of reading as well as their historical perspectives;
- Provide academic atmosphere for theory-building in relation to reading education;
- Equip reading professionals with the knowledge, skillss an attitudes necessary to assume a variety of leadership roles in research;
- Develop reading professionals who are proactive in initiating educational, and policy- making in all situations involving reading.

- SHORT -TERM PROGRAMS ON LOCAL/ FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
English Language Proficiency for Overseas Filipino Workers
The course is designed for OFWs/working adults who wish improve their communication skills in English in order to improve their employment prospects abroad. It teaches the basic communication skills needed to communicate in a variety of different work settings. The course seeks to enable participants to recognize their strengths and needs in language learning and to give them the confidence to use English more effectively to achieve their own goals.
French Language Proficiency
This course is administered in cooperation with the Cultural Office of the French Government. This is designed for doctoral students to meet their foreign language requirements to earn their Ph.D. degree and for students majoring in English and Sciences to gain basic knowledge and skills of the French language and culture.
Spanish Language Proficiency
This course is conducted in cooperation with Agencia Española de Cooperacion (AECI). Spanish visiting professor teaches the courses. This program is designed to cater to the academic needs of doctoral students and Social Science majors who will be empowered to read revelant documents in Spanish. This course teaches the basic communication and other language skills necessary to communicate in a variety of different communication situations, and to perform a particular role in any of the Spanish countries the students chooses.
English Language Proficiency for Foreigners/International Students This course aims to develop the communicative skills and language functions needed by the international foreign studnets in their academic and social pursuits in the Philippines. It is designed specifically for entering foreign students to help them attain a level of language competence that will match the demands of their academic works through immersion and providing authentic resources. The course also addresses to the needs of the students' social interpersonal skills necessary for survival in the Philippines.
- Filipino Language Proficiency for Foreigners (Businessman,heritage students, tourists, etc.)
Foreign businessmen, heritage students, tourists and international students come to the Philippines to transact busines, to visit their relatives or tour the Philippines for pleasure. To make their stay more comfortable, they want to learn Filipino language, which can also help them to cope their specific needs in the language and culture.

Objectives:
Aims to equip the individual who is interested in becoming an ESL/EFL teacher with knowledge and skills essential for the effective teaching of English to Speakers of other langugaes. Stressing the interdependence of theory and practice, the program strives to maintain a balance between theoretical and practical concerns by offering courses that deal with the lingustics, psychologial, an socio-cultural aspects of language as well as those which treat the methodological and practical aspects of language learning and teaching.
The Program is intended to cater to the following participants, who desire to teach English to speakers of other languages, including foreign students who qualify for admission to the program:
- Non-English majors in the Bachelor of Secondary education curricula or those pursuing other baccalaureate degrees in PNU;
