UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

  • Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd)
    • History
      Aims to train teachers who can instill the spirit of nationalism, humanism, and spiritualism in our youth through the effective teaching of History (Philippine, Asian and World), and consequently serve as models for other history teachers .
    • Music Education
      Aims to enhance students’ sensitivity to the expressive qualities of music. It equips prospective music teachers with necessary knowledge, skill and attitudes to enable them to teach music effectively, and to exercise leadership in their respective schools and communities
    • Physical Education
      Aims to produce effective physical education mentors, trainers, and directors; proficient and skilled coaches, dance and sports enthusiasts. It also provides students with the necessary skills, competencies, and knowledge to organize the program that would contribute to the full mental, social, emotional and physical development of individuals for life.
    • Social Science
      Aims to enhance the students’ critical and questioning skills to analyze social, political and economic issues and problems. It attempts to instill love of country, commitment to democratic beliefs and principles as well as to demonstrate skills in applying democratic values to life through social participation. It equips the future teachers with professional and personal competencies in new areas such as peace and global education, human rights, environmental and multicultural education, gender and future studies.
    • Speech and Theater Arts
      Aims to equip the future teachers with adequate knowledge in teaching of speech and dramatic arts. The two language streams (Stream A-English and Stream B-Filipino) also prepare them to be teachers of either English or Filipino.
    • Values Education
      Aims to train Values Education teachers who will become effective agents for personal social transformation. It equips students with professional competencies, desired qualities and proper values needed to build a society that is Pro-God, Pro-people, Pro-community and Pro-nature.
  • Bachelor of Science in Psychology
    Aims to equip students with competencies necessary ion their future work as helping professionals in the school setting. It allows the students to opt for training as a school psychologist or a guidance counselor.
    • Stream 1: Educational Psychology
      Equip students with adequate knowledge, skills and values to work as a school psychologist. It provides them with professional competencies including research skills directed towards enhancing school children’s learning.
    • Stream 2: Guidance and Counseling
      Equips students with adequate knowledge, values and skills necessary in addressing development needs/crises and academic difficulties of learners and to remedy existing school conditions that inhibit their optimum growth and development.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

Provides the students an option to train in another specialization or to deepen their majorship or area of concentration through an 18-21 unit course work. The certificate equips the would-be teacher to handle the subject effectively in the elementary and/or secondary levels

    • Music Education
      Equips students with pedagogical competencies to handle teaching of Music in basic education effectively.
    • Physical Education
      Provides students a specialized training in the teaching of physical education in the elementary and secondary education levels.
    • Speech and Theater Arts
      Equips students enrolled in other majorships, and teachers in the field with the basis needed to put up school theater productions and utilize drama as teaching technique.
    • Values Education
      Aims to produce teachers imbued with the desired qualities and appropriate Filipino values who can help build the nation to be Pro-God, Pro-people, Pro-Country and Pro-Nature.
    • Women Studies
      Equips students’ necessary competencies in the study of women, her role in the society within the context of the historical, socio-cultural, religious, and political realities in the Philippines. The program addresses the root cause of gender inequalities and aims to clarify myth’s misconception, misperception and distortion of women’s true worth as persons and as agents of social change.

GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

  • MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION

    Specializations
  • Child Study
    First, Child study specialization was offered in 1967. The first enrollees were scholars sponsored by the Ford Foundation, selected from PNU Faculty members and teachers from the Department of Education, Culture and Sports. At present, teachers from private and public schools who went through preschool Education or Early Childhood Education are enrolled in this specialization. Objectives are: 1) to encourage, conduct and utilize researches concerning the Filipino child particularly as regards to his stages of growth and development; 2) to heighten the level of aspiration toward academic excellence and professional leadership
  • Drama Education and Theater Arts
    The Drama Education and Theater Arts shall primarily help firm up the structure of Filipino culture through the performing arts. It shall provide higher, professional and special instructions and promote research and extension services, advance studies and progressive leadership in the performing arts, culture and other fields as may be relevant.
  • Guidance & Counseling (old)
    The first curriculum in MA in Education with specialization in Guidance and Counseling was approved through the Board of Trustees resolution No. 89835. The enrollees were public and private elementary and secondary school teachers and guidance counselors in the country. In response to the demands of the times, revision of the old curriculum was proposed and approved through the Board of Trustees res. No. 1306 s. 1976 and No. 1483, s. 1997. The latest revision of the curriculum was made in July, 1992
  • Guidance and Counseling (new)
    The revised MA in Guidance and Counseling is designed to equip graduate students with a specialized and intensive training in the development, supervision and management of guidance services in the school setting. The same program also intends to prepare counselors for the licensure examinations in guidance and counseling.
  • History Teaching
    The Master of Arts in Education with specialization in Teaching History is a program of study designed to provide teachers and prospective teachers of History theoretical background and analytical skills in Teaching History in the elementary, secondary and tertiary levels as well as competence in addressing problems and issues relevant to History and History teaching. A central focus of this program of study is the analysis of and evaluation of current issues, problems and thrusts in the Teaching of History applying diverse perspectives. It seeks to strengthen and deepen teacher’s knowledge and competence to analyze educational situations as well as to develop, plan, implement and evaluate history education programs.

    This program is of particular relevance to History teachers in the field , educators and researchers. It offers graduate students opportunity to develop fundamental theoretical insights and practical research skills. It serves to bring together graduate students with diverse but related interests and to provide a forum for student-faculty interaction on various topics relating to history.
  • Music Education
    The master’s degree with specialization in Music Education is offered to equip the leaders and would be leaders and specialist in the field of school music progressive ideas competencies to perform their task.
  • School Psychology
    The program addresses the need for school psychologists in schools around the country at all levels of education who can professionally assist in diagnosing and remediating mild to serious emotional problems of children, youth, parent and teachers. Psychological services are now a must in schools to reduce if not eliminate problems of students affecting their total development.
  • Social Science Teaching
    The MAEd with specialization in Social Science Teaching integrates the many theories and methods of the many disciplines of social science such as anthropology, sociology, political science, geography, history and philosophy into comprehensive study of education and society. The central focus of this interdisciplinary study is the analysis and evaluation of current issues, problems, and thrusts in the teaching of social science/studies using inverse perspectives. It seeks to strengthen and deepen teacher’s knowledge and competence to analyze educational situations as well as to develop, plan, implement and evaluate social science/studies education programs.

    This program is of particular relevance to social science/studies teachers in the field, educators, researchers and community development workers. It offers graduate students opportunity to develop fundamental theoretical insights and practical research skills. It serves to bring together graduate students with diverse but related interests and to provide a forum for student-faculty interaction on various topics relating to social sciences/studies education.
  • Physical Education
    The master’s degree in Physical Education is designed to equip the prospective specialist with competencies, which will serve as tool in the performance of his/he leadership role in instruction, research and extension work.
  • Values Education
    The Values Education Program Framework advanced by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) is premised on the philosophy of the human person. The goal of the VE program is to provide and promote values education in all three levels of the educational system for the development of the human person who is committed to the building of a just and humane society and an independent and democratic nation (DECS order No. 6, 1988.

    The Human person as described in the VE program framework is the subject of the PNU Values Education program. Moreover, the educational process and content for values formation are founded on the spiritual and material nature of the human person and actualization of the purpose of his/her creation.

    The MAT in Values Education is designed to provide a specialized and intensive training program for teachers in the field of Values Education. The program is specifically geared towards the enhancement of competencies among DepEd scholars in the teaching of values education.

  • DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
  • Ph. D in Guidance & Counseling
    The Ph.D. Guidance and Counseling is designed to provide a formal and specialized training for counselors. It envisions providing a formal and specialized training for counselors. It envisions to stimulate leadership in the training of academicians and counselor-practitioners in the field who are competent and highly skilled in counselor education and practice.
